Ultrasound in Gynaecology

At Women’s Health Care Ltd, we offer a high quality clinical and diagnostic service to women with concerns about their gynaecological health. Ultrasound is a very effective method of examination of internal organs and provides useful information about the causes of many gynaecological problems.

Ultrasound scans are helpful in the assessment of women who are experiencing pelvic pain, menstrual problems or having difficulties in becoming pregnant. Ultrasound examination is very helpful in confirming that a coil (intrauterine device) is in its correct place.

COMMON REASONS FOR GYNAECOLOGICAL SCANNING:

Abnormal periods (heavy or irregular)
Lower abdominal and pelvic pain
For investigation of infertility
Mass in pelvis or lower abdomen
Bleeding after menopause
Screening for ovarian cancer
Missing threads of an intrauterine device (coil)

AN ULTRASOUND ASSESSMENT CAN DETECT MANY GYNAECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS SUCH AS:

Ovarian cysts
Endometriotic cysts
Fibroids
Endometrial polyps
Polycystic ovaries (PCOS)

Apart from the usual grey-scale scanning, colour Doppler studies may give additional information on the nature of cysts and masses. An ultrasound is also particularly valuable for the diagnosis and management of various complications of early pregnancy.

TRANSVAGINAL ULTRASOUND

The scans are performed internally using a long narrow probe that is inserted into the vagina. The procedure is quick and painless and takes around 10 minutes to complete.
